This year saw a return to its roots for the Barney Mullins Swim. After a disappointing cancellation of the public event, the members only swim was a great success.
40 swimmers lined up on a beautiful beach day, for a 1.2km swim in the warm, clear water of Queenscliff Bay (apparently that’s what it’s called..).
The course was set for 4 half-laps of the bay, with the usual start in Kiddies corner. Out to the pool and across to the southern end of the clubhouse and back twice, then back in at the north end.
We had a number of swimmers join from the youth group, who seemed to enjoy themselves, as well a good mix of old and new members line up for the swim.
A dozen or so chose to do the short course (out to the pool and back in), with the remainder in for the long haul. Conditions were great for swimming, but the wind did start to pick up which made for some chop to contend with on laps 3 & 4. Seemed like the turning buoy got further away as we swam..
The lead changed hands a number of times during the race and ultimately came down to a wave at the end with Chris Pendray taking home the big prize of the Barney Mullins Shield.
A sausage sizzle and short presentation was held in the back courtyard after the swim, with a good day had by all.
Thanks to those who swam, special thanks to Pricey for water safety and can setting, Richard Hawtin, Peter Block and James Coates for jumping on rescue boards as well. And a big thank you to those on the BBQ for us.
Next year sees the 40th anniversary of the first Barney Mullins Swim and we hope to make it a memorable event.
Yours in swimming,
AdV.
